Mr. Shamsudin's Retirement

1 March 2007 was retirement day for our beloved senior Principal, En. Samsudin b. Hamidan. He has been the principal of our school since the 1st of October 1999. Throughout his service in our school, he has made many significant changes to it, and there was no end to his contributions to the school even to the very last day of his work.

Among his contributions were:
  • the building of the surau
  • upgrading and refurbishing the School Resource Centre
  • upgrading the V3 Cafeteria
  • building a new assembly ground (Dataran Anugerah)
  • constructing the 'Heritage Corner' - a gallery of the school's history
  • upgrading the school field (the Georgian Green)
  • upgrading the pedestrian way, floors and corridor of the main block as well as changing the old doors of the classrooms
  • purchasing a Pregio van for the school's usage
  • founding of the school Caklempong team
  • alteration of the Music room
  • 'Smart Athlete' program
  • 'Reading Camp' program
  • introducing the corporate uniform and school batik shirt for teachers

It is thus no surprise that he will be missed by many present as well as ex-Georgians.

En. Samsudin explaining the function of 'Anjung Sam'. Its décor is very kampong-like, with wooden panelling on the walls, and authentic lantern lamps swinging from the ceiling.

Coloured glass windows, potted plants, and wooden tables, chairs and even a ‘bartop’ help retain the cosy feeling. The place is not stuffy either, as a large fan will keep you and your drinks cool – yes, there is even a drink vending machine which serves hot drinks. In the words of our beloved principal: “…it’s a good way for students to take a break after studying…”

The guests enjoyed theirselves over coffee and tea served by the librarians as they chatted about old times. However, the current times were also not forgotten, as Mr. Samsuddin mentioned that there was free wireless access at the site, and the funky red stools at the bar top were very noticeable, reminding everyone that the place catered to both young and old.

After adjourning, the principal and his wife were seated in the yellow Mini and pulled to the front of the school by various representatives of the uniform bodies. The kompang players followed from behind. The car passed through two lines of students, consisting of students in their full uniform bodies’ regalia, as well as selected prefects. Before entering the assembly grounds, the principal was greeted by silat exponents who demonstrated a few moves for him.

Some excitement was caused by a group of scouts, who waved placards at the principal from their vantage point on the first floor of the main block. When put together, the letters waved by individual scouts spelled out the phrase: “We’ll miss you!” and “Scouts love U”.

The choir then gave their rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’, as the students filed out of the grounds, each one taking the opportunity to shake hands with Mr.Samsuddin and thanking him for his services. The rendition was heartfelt and rather lengthy, as the choir had to keep singing until everyone had shaken hands with Mr. Samsuddin. Kudos to them!

retirement

En. Samsudin was given a grand sending-off as the car moved slowly out of the school down the road lined with students on both sides. As it passed under the school arch, showers of confetti were released to the pleasant surprise of all present.

Before the car left, the principal was treated to a rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’, played on violins by two students.
